Indian college student accessing digital academic records on a laptop and smartphone

Students applying for college admission or studying in higher education may increasingly encounter terms such as APAAR ID, ABC ID and Academic Bank of Credits. Although these terms are closely related, they serve different purposes within India’s digital education system.

This guide explains what APAAR and ABC mean, their benefits and how students can access their APAAR card through DigiLocker.

What is an APAAR ID?

APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It provides a learner with a unique, lifelong academic identity.

The APAAR ID is designed to connect a student’s verified academic records, including examination results, qualifications, certificates and credits, through participating educational platforms.

What is the Academic Bank of Credits?

The Academic Bank of Credits, commonly called ABC, is a digital platform regulated by the University Grants Commission. It works like an academic credit bank. Credits earned from recognised educational institutions can be digitally recorded, accumulated, transferred or redeemed according to applicable academic regulations.

APAAR is the student’s identity, while ABC is the system used to manage academic credits linked to that identity.

APAAR ID and ABC ID: are they different?

In current official systems, APAAR provides the learner’s lifelong academic identity, and the Academic Bank of Credits uses that identity to manage academic records and credits.

Students may still see the term “ABC ID” on university forms, admission portals and older instructions. They should enter the number exactly as displayed on their APAAR or ABC card in DigiLocker.

Benefits for students

  • Access linked academic records digitally.
  • Maintain a consolidated record of qualifications and credits.
  • Support credit transfer between participating institutions.
  • Reduce repeated submission of physical academic documents.
  • Make verification easier for authorised institutions.
  • Create a UGC DEB ID for recognised online or distance-learning admission.

The availability of individual records depends on whether the concerned board, university or institution has uploaded and linked the information.

How college students can create an APAAR ID

  1. Create or sign in to an authenticated DigiLocker account.
  2. Open the education section in DigiLocker.
  3. Select the APAAR ID creation service.
  4. Choose the educational institution.
  5. Enter the admission year and roll number requested by the system.
  6. Verify the displayed personal and academic details.
  7. Submit the request.
  8. Access or download the APAAR card from DigiLocker.

Students should follow any additional instructions issued by their college or university.

APAAR ID for school students

For school students, the process may be coordinated through the school. It can include informing parents, obtaining voluntary parental consent and generating the APAAR ID through the UDISE system against the student’s PEN. The generated ID is subsequently made available through the student’s DigiLocker account.

Check your details carefully

Before submitting an APAAR request, verify the student’s full name, date of birth, gender, institution name, admission year and roll or registration number. The spelling of the name should match the relevant Aadhaar and institutional records.

How to correct APAAR details

  1. Correct the information in Aadhaar, if required.
  2. Complete or update KYC in DigiLocker.
  3. Update APAAR after the corrected details appear.

Students can also use the ABC support system or contact their educational institution when an academic record, institution or qualification is missing.

Is APAAR mandatory for every student?

Students should follow the specific instructions issued by their school, university, examination authority or admission portal. They should not assume that every application requires APAAR unless the relevant authority has requested it.

Important safety advice

Create or access an APAAR ID only through official government platforms. Do not share Aadhaar OTPs, DigiLocker credentials or passwords with private agents.

Students should check official portals and institutional notices for the latest procedures before submitting information.
